Ravenna, a treasure chest of art, history and culture.

Ravenna is a treasure chest of art, history and culture of the first order; in its glorious past, it was capital three times between the 5th and 8th centuries and the magnificence of this period has left important remains that have come down to us today. Ravenna is the city of mosaic art which did not originate here but found its highest form of expression in a mixture of symbolism and realism, Roman and Byzantine influences and even today this ancient craft lives on in schools and workshops.

Birdwatching in Marina Romea

Some pictures of the Po Delta National Park

Bird watching is still a relatively new activity in the Po Delta National Park which has only recently been "discovered" by foreign birdwatchers. Although bird watching is beginning to gain popularity in Italy too, the area of the Delta sees more birdwatchers from north-west Europe than Italians arriving with their binoculars and telescopes to discover the Delta.

Although the birdwatcher cannot expect to find species in this area that are not to be found elsewhere in Europe, the Delta is home to a number of interesting nesting, wintering and migrating bird populations. The Po Delta is known internationally for its abundant population of little terns, the most numerous in Europe, the only nesting population of pygmy cormorants and the only European site in which the lesser crested gull can be seen regularly.
During the migration season the Adriatic coast plays a very important role as a corridor from northern regions to southern Europe in the autumn and in the opposite direction in spring. In the winter months the concentration of aquatic bird life is impressive, very often with more than 55.000 birds including some of the rarest European species such as the ferruginous duck and red-crested pochard while flocks of flamingos, originally present only as a wintering species, have now chosen the protected areas to spend the summer months and build their nests.

The Po Delta National Park is a wetland with features varying from sandy dunes of ancient origin and typical vegetation of the Mediterranean bush to very old woods of umbrella pines, salt pans, submerged deciduous forests, open lagoons of shallow water with a rich and varied fish population, sandy beaches and river mouths, marshes and swampy grassland.

Bird watching in the Po Delta is easy. There are many sites in which it is possible to spend an entire day observing the abundant bird life. Professional guides can be contacted or you can ask the hotel staff who will be happy to give you all the indications necessary to make your stay a delightful experience.
