Ravenna, a treasure chest of art, history and culture.
Ravenna is a treasure chest of art, history and culture of the first order; in its glorious past, it was capital three times between the 5th and 8th centuries and the magnificence of this period has left important remains that have come down to us today. Ravenna is the city of mosaic art which did not originate here but found its highest form of expression in a mixture of symbolism and realism, Roman and Byzantine influences and even today this ancient craft lives on in schools and workshops.

The Po Delta National Park
Marina Romea is a seaside resort located 12 km north of Ravenna in the Po Delta National Park. Between the resort and the sea there is a pine wood 4 km long and 400 m wide (state owned).
The fine sandy beach extends for 4 km and is 120 m wide. The bathing establishments are very well equipped and alternate with wide stretches of free beach.
The main feature of this area is the total tranquillity and the way in which the resort blends into the surrounding nature. Marina Romea is connected to Ravenna by an urban bus line.
A stay in Marina Romea for a few days individually or in organised groups offers you plenty of activities in addition to those of the traditional beach holiday. There are numerous interesting excursions into the countryside of Romagna and plenty of places to visit, all of great historical, artistic and folkloristic interest such as Ravenna with its magnificent Byzantine mosaics.
A complete tour of all eight buildings appearing in the UNESCO World Heritage List, including the splendid basilicas of San Vitale and S. Apollinare in Classe, takes at least two days.
The Park
This is the largest of all the regional parks, divided into six different areas which protect the residual wetlands around the southern area of the Po river delta and conserve a rich historical and cultural heritage.
The coastal lagoons, ponds and brackish water marshes are a relic of the much wider ancient delta and characterise the lowlands in the Emilia Romagna region. The area is of international importance and provides refuge to different kinds of animals especially resident and migrating birds (herons, ducks, grebes, stilts and avocets, etc.).
The various sectors of the park are: Volano-Mesola-Goro, the historical town of Comacchio, the Comacchio Marshes, San Vitale Pine Wood, Tide-ways of Ravenna, Classe Pine Wood, Cervia Salt-pans and Campotto di Argenta. These nature reserves, located near the busy summer resorts and other areas densely occupied by man, not only protect rare ecosystems but also very important historical and architectural sites such as the castle of Mesola near the wood of holm-oaks bearing the same name, the Abbey of Pomposa which is one of the most valuable examples of Romanesque art, the Etrurian necropolis of Spina, the lagoon town of Comacchio, the basilica of S. Apollinare in Classe, with its famous Byzantine mosaics, which stands between Ravenna and the Classe Pine Wood.
There are also relics of human activities such as salt production, fish breeding (especially eels) and land reclamation.
